Bayern's Joy Tainted by Test Match Victory After Musiala's Collapse
FC Bayern Munich concluded their pre-season with a 4-2 win against 1. FC Heidenheim in their final friendly match before the Super Cup. However, the victory was marred by another concerning health incident involving Jamal Musiala.
The goalscorers for Bayern were Felipe Chavez (25th minute), Arijon Ibrahimović (47th minute), Luis Diaz (78th minute), and Nathanial Brown (83rd minute). For the second-division side, Yannik Wagner scored in the 5th minute, and Julian Niehues found the net in the 44th minute.
Wagner Shone Against Munich
Bayern coach Vincent Kompany opted to rest several key players initially. Goalkeeper Manuel Neuer and Joshua Kimmich, along with Tom Bischof, were not even in the squad due to load management, as the record champions had announced before kickoff.
Munich found themselves behind in the fifth minute. A misplaced ball in midfield allowed Heidenheim's Yannik Wagner to break through and score the opening goal. Jonas Urbig, in goal for Bayern, was unable to stop the low shot. Despite trying to build through possession and combinations, Bayern struggled to create clear chances. Heidenheim's Wagner continued to be a threat, with Urbig saving a long-range effort in the 18th minute. Wagner then attempted to set up a teammate shortly after, but found no takers.
Chavez Equalizes with a Stunning Strike
Bayern had few ideas from open play until they were awarded a penalty. Luca Kerber of Heidenheim committed a foul, and the resulting penalty was converted by Felipe Chavez, a Bayern academy product recently on loan at 1. FC Köln, leveling the score at 1-1 with a superb strike.
After the equalizer, Kompany brought on Ismael Saibari and Min-Jae Kim for Mike Wisdom and Dayot Upamecano. However, the desired impact was not immediate. Shortly before halftime, Sapoko Ndiaye cleared a cross into the penalty area, where Niehues met it with a volley to put Heidenheim back in front at 2-1.
The first half was generally characterized by defensive frailties rather than offensive brilliance. The next equalizer also came from a penalty rather than a well-worked move or a moment of individual skill. Binder had dribbled past several opponents and was fouled, leading the referee to point to the spot. Ibrahimović confidently converted the penalty to make it 2-2.
Musiala Collapses After Four Minutes of Play
In a significant rotation, Kompany introduced Harry Kane, Jamal Musiala, Michael Olise, Luis Diaz, and Aleksandar Pavlovic. Musiala had only been on the field for a few minutes when he collapsed, mirroring a previous incident in the friendly against RB Leipzig. He was able to leave the pitch with the assistance of the medical staff. In the closing stages of the match, the substitutes Diaz and Brown secured the victory for Munich on the rain-soaked Ostalb.
Bayern's first competitive fixture of the season is next Saturday. They will face league runners-up Borussia Dortmund in the Super Cup.
