The Welsh Rugby Union (WRU) has announced that its proposal to reduce the number of its men’s domestic teams from four to three has been indefinitely postponed. This significant decision will not be implemented before 2028 at the earliest.
This postponement follows the unexpected collapse of negotiations for the sale of the Cardiff franchise. Y11 Sports & Media had been engaged in discussions with the WRU regarding the acquisition of the Cardiff team. The failure of these talks has directly impacted the WRU’s strategic restructuring plans.
Chief Executive Abi Tierney is currently facing considerable scrutiny and pressure stemming from these developments. She has publicly defended her position and the WRU’s handling of the situation.
