Hyron Andrews Died from Aortic Tear, Autopsy Reveals

Hyron Andrews, the former Sale Sharks second rower found deceased at his new team's hotel before a Champions Cup match in France, died of natural causes. An autopsy determined the cause was a tear in his aorta, the main artery carrying blood from the heart.

The rupture caused blood to accumulate in the sac surrounding his heart. Investigators initially considered a fall, heart attack, or aneurysm, which is a ruptured bulging blood vessel.

A tear in the aorta is a rare and critical medical condition, often linked to undetected high blood pressure or a congenital defect.

Andrews' body has not yet been returned to his native South Africa. His wife, Maighlin, who is raising their two young sons, has requested privacy during the repatriation process, as stated by the Lions.

Andrews' teammates played their scheduled match against La Rochelle on Saturday in his memory. Home fans at Stade Marcel-Deflandre applauded the Lions' arrival. Lions players showed visible emotion during a minute of silence before the game.

Sale, where Andrews played for two and a half seasons, also offered their condolences. Rugby director Alex Sanderson remarked that the entire team "loved playing with Hyron and being around him."

Hyron Andrews' Passing: Autopsy Confirms Aortic Tear

Former Sale Sharks player Hyron Andrews died from natural causes, an autopsy has found. The 31-year-old was discovered unresponsive in a hotel shower before a Champions Cup fixture in France. The cause of death was a tear in his aorta, the primary artery responsible for blood flow from the heart.

This rupture led to a build-up of blood within the pericardium, the sac encasing the heart. Investigations considered various possibilities, including a fall, cardiac arrest, or an aneurysm – the bursting of a weakened blood vessel.

Aortic tears are a serious and uncommon medical emergency, potentially caused by undiagnosed hypertension or a birth anomaly.

His repatriation to South Africa is pending. His wife, Maighlin, has issued a statement through the Lions asking for respect and privacy as the process unfolds.

Andrews' teammates proceeded with their game against La Rochelle as a tribute. They were met with applause from the French club's supporters, and Lions players displayed grief during a pre-match moment of silence.

Sale Sharks also paid tribute. Director of rugby Alex Sanderson stated that Andrews was highly valued by his former teammates, who "loved playing with Hyron and being around him."
