McHaffie Secures Victory for Edinburgh Against Stormers
Edinburgh, who led 3-0 at halftime, defeated Stormers 17-13 at Hive Stadium. Edinburgh's tries came from Hill and McHaffie, with two conversions and a penalty from Grayson. Stormers scored a try through Dayimani, converted by Ahmed, who also added two penalties.
Edinburgh continued their winning start to the United Rugby Championship season, following up their bonus-point win against Ulster. South Africa captain Siya Kolisi featured for Stormers for the first time in over five years. Edinburgh took an early lead with a James Grayson penalty. The first half saw minimal scoring opportunities, disrupted by dropped balls and referee calls. Liam McConnell was a key player for Edinburgh, disrupting three Stormers lineouts in the first half. Magnus Bradbury’s potential try just before halftime was disallowed due to a double movement.
Early in the second half, Yaqeen Ahmed kicked two penalties for Stormers, putting them ahead despite a strong breeze affecting play. Edinburgh's opening try came from a loose Stormers lineout throw, intercepted by Jerry Blyth-Lafferty. A subsequent burst from substitute hooker Paul Hill saw him dive over for the score. Wandisile Simelane appeared to score for Stormers, but replays showed Piers O'Connor had forced him into touch. Stormers then took the lead when number eight Hacjivah Dayimani powered over from a dominant scrum. Edinburgh responded with a strong attack, culminating in Rory McHaffie gathering Grayson’s pass off the ground and scoring on his home debut. In the final play, a lineout in the corner for Stormers was disrupted by McConnell, allowing Edinburgh to secure the ball and the victory.
Edinburgh head coach Sean Everitt commented on the hard-earned win, expressing pride in his team's effort and the passion they showed. He acknowledged the different challenge posed by Stormers compared to Ulster and highlighted the importance of containing their set-piece. Everitt praised his young players, many of whom are under 22, for their performance against experienced South African internationals, believing it will build significant belief.
