Rugby Star Hyron Andrews, 31, Died From Torn Main Artery, Autopsy Confirms, After Being Found in Locked Shower Cubicle
The autopsy report has detailed the tragic circumstances surrounding the death of former Sale Sharks lock Hyron Andrews. The 31-year-old, who played for South Africa's Lions, was discovered unresponsive in a locked shower at the Atalante-Relais Thalasso Hotel before his club's Champions Cup match against La Rochelle. Despite the arrival of emergency services, he was pronounced dead at the scene.
His body remains in France, where the autopsy identified a tear in his aorta, the main artery. Andrews had recently returned to South Africa to join the Lions this summer, having previously played 45 matches for English club Sale, including 19 in the last season.
Lions Rugby Company stated that, according to the autopsy, Hyron's death resulted from an aortic dissection, likely due to an aortic aneurysm. French authorities described the cause as "a tear in the aorta (due to natural causes), which led to a significant accumulation of blood within the sac surrounding the heart." The Andrews family has requested privacy as the repatriation process begins. A timeline for the return of his body to South Africa is not yet set.
The Lions proceeded with their Champions Cup game against La Rochelle the day after Andrews' death, ultimately losing 31-14. Tributes have come from across the rugby world.
Alex Sanderson, Sale's director of rugby, remembered Andrews as a "brilliant guy and team-mate," skilled on the field and a good friend off it. He noted Andrews' charisma and how well he and his wife, Maiglin, embraced their life in Manchester. Sanderson emphasized Andrews' devotion as a husband and father to their two sons, calling him a "privilege to know" and his death "devastating."
Andrews was also a former South Africa Under-20 international. Mark Alexander, president of the South African Rugby Union, expressed shock and deep sympathy for Andrews' family, friends, and the Lions rugby community. He described Andrews as a respected figure whose contribution and impact would be remembered fondly. The South African rugby family's thoughts are with his wife Maiglin and all mourning his loss, hoping they find strength in shared memories and support.
