Newcastle Red Bulls Delay Fehi Fineanganofo's Arrival to Accommodate World Cup Dream

Fast-scoring All Blacks winger Fehi Fineanganofo has secured Newcastle Red Bulls' agreement to postpone his arrival in Tyneside. The move allows him to pursue his ambition of playing in the Rugby World Cup.

Fineanganofo, 24, signed a two-year deal with Newcastle in January, set to begin this season. However, his standout performances for the Hurricanes in Super Rugby brought him into national team contention. He debuted for New Zealand against France in July.

Under current All Blacks selection policies, Fineanganofo would have risked his international career and Rugby World Cup 2027 eligibility by moving overseas this year. Consequently, Newcastle has permitted him to remain with the Hurricanes for another season. This year, he set a new Super Rugby record for tries in a single campaign.

His Newcastle contract remains for two seasons but now covers the 2027-28 and 2028-29 campaigns. "I'm truly grateful to Newcastle Red Bulls for their support and understanding," Fineanganofo stated. "The chance to stay in New Zealand and push for Rugby World Cup selection means a great deal. I'm fully committed to joining the club after the tournament and giving my all."

Newcastle's general manager, Neil McIlroy, commented, "We fully support Fehi's ambition to represent his country at the 2027 Rugby World Cup. This aligns with our philosophy of aiming high and helping our athletes achieve their goals. Fehi's arrival in 2027, with added international experience that will enhance his already formidable skills as a top winger, signals our club's direction."

This agreement resolves prolonged uncertainty regarding Fineanganofo's future. New Zealand Rugby had previously denied plans to facilitate his departure from the Newcastle contract. Just weeks ago, Newcastle's head coach, Dan McFarland, anticipated Fineanganofo would join in November for the current season.

The team began the Prem season with Werner Kok and 35-year-old Christian Wade as their primary wingers, with Kok signed in June amid growing doubts about Fineanganofo's transfer. McIlroy indicated the club might still seek additional players for the outside back position.

"We are satisfied with the quality and depth of our current squad, but we may still look to strengthen our outside back options if a suitable player becomes available," he added.

Newcastle started their league campaign with a 59-26 loss to Northampton and are scheduled to play Leicester at home on Saturday.
