Northampton Dominates Newcastle in Title Defence Opener

Northampton Saints started their title defence with a convincing 59-26 win against a revamped Newcastle Red Bulls side at Franklin's Gardens. Just three months after their Prem title win, Saints showed dominance, scoring nine tries.

James Patter and Tommy Freeman each secured hat-tricks. George Hendy, Alex Coles, and Ollie Sleightholme also contributed tries. Fly-half Fin Smith orchestrated the attack effectively.

Despite the defeat, Newcastle secured a bonus point by scoring four tries. This performance offers hope they might avoid finishing last in the league for the first time in five seasons.

Patter scored twice in the opening 15 minutes, followed by tries from Hendy and Coles. Freeman also added a try in the first half, which Northampton controlled.

Newcastle showed promise with two tries from Christian Wade. His first, a spectacular solo effort, had momentarily equalised the score.

Newcastle's defensive efforts were hindered by two yellow cards: one for Harrison Obatoyinbo and another for Pouri Rakete-Stones. These lapses allowed Northampton to extend their lead in the second half.

Henry Pollock delivered a strong performance throughout the match, justifying his recent contract extension. He was a key player alongside Smith, Freeman, and Patter.

Freeman completed his hat-trick with two second-half tries, interspersed with Cam Jordan's first try for Newcastle. Sleightholme scored soon after coming on as a substitute, and Patter sealed the win with his third try.

Werner Kok scored a late try for Newcastle, securing a bonus point for the visitors.
