Füllkrug's Return to Werder Bremen Perfect

Niclas Füllkrug, a 33-year-old striker and fan favorite, has officially returned to Werder Bremen on a one-year loan deal, three years after his initial departure. The move has generated significant excitement in Bremen.

Described with superlatives like 'transfer hammer,' 'surprise transfer of the summer,' and 'sensational return,' Füllkrug's arrival at the Weser-Stadion was met with widespread anticipation. He was seen posing in the Werder Bremen jersey, his signature gap-toothed smile evident.

'A Very Special Club for Me'

"I've never made a secret of the fact that Werder is a very special club for me," Füllkrug stated after passing his medical. "That's why I was also prepared to make financial concessions for the loan to happen. It was important to me to play for Werder again. I'm really looking forward to Bremen and the Bundesliga."

The former national player is expected to provide an immediate boost to Werder's struggling offense, as noted by Head of Professional Football Peter Niemeyer. Füllkrug joins from West Ham United, a relegated Premier League club, on loan. He has reportedly accepted a pay cut to facilitate the move. This signing follows closely on the heels of Werder's acquisition of Eren Dinkci from SC Freiburg.

Füllkrug Reignites Fan Hearts

Coach Daniel Thioune praised Füllkrug as a "classic goalscorer, physically strong, very good in the air, technically sound, and capable of holding up the ball. He will enrich our game in every respect. Furthermore, he is an absolute leader who sets an example on and off the pitch."

The name Füllkrug alone is enough to make Werder fans' hearts beat faster, evoking memories of past glories. The striker began his professional career in Bremen 14 years ago and played for the club again from 2019 to 2023. He was instrumental in their promotion to the Bundesliga in the 2021/22 season, scoring 19 goals in the second division.

Two Years of Struggles

In the top flight, Füllkrug became the league's top scorer with 16 goals, earned a national team call-up, and transferred to Borussia Dortmund. From there, he moved to England for €27 million in the summer of 2025.

However, Füllkrug, who has been plagued by injuries throughout his career, struggled to establish himself at West Ham. In January 2026, he moved on loan to AC Milan for more playing time, hoping to impress for the upcoming World Cup. Yet, his stint in Milan was also unsuccessful, with only one goal in 20 appearances. Consequently, Füllkrug missed the World Cup and found himself on the sidelines at West Ham.

The 24-time international is expected to bring much-needed finishing quality to the team's final third, helping Werder regain its national appeal and, crucially, avoid relegation battles. Coach Thioune had recently lamented the team's lack of finishing prowess in the attacking third – a quality Füllkrug undoubtedly possesses and intends to demonstrate regularly in the Bundesliga once more.
